Our small family business began in 2019 as a dream when Glen decided he wanted to make his passion a reality. Glen has built the business by hand himself and puts 100% passion and sweat into making the dream real.
Natasha works behind the scenes to make things run smoothly (or not so smoothly sometimes). Working full-time and running the business, Jurien heights Plant and Fish Nursery is a beautiful place created from hard work and love.
With a little help from our four legged helpers, we slowly started the building process of the shop.
We definitely could not have done it without our helpers Delilah, Tesla, Lillie, Frankie and Demi
We have a large paludarium with a range of fish and a baby turtle for you to see! We also have a large fairy garden, a large aquarium display, many ponds and a living wardrobe.
Come and see us in store to find out more.
Before the business came the giant garden pond at 16m x 4m with its own small jetty and bridge, our main garden pond was designed to be its own natural ecosystem. The pond is home to our adult Longneck Turtles who have been laying their eggs in the adjacent garden each year, resulting in 6 - 8 turtle hatchlings each year.
With many long days and much blood, sweat and tears we finished building the first 9 minigolf holes just in time for the opening deadline we set ourselves of January 1st 2021. Having never laid concrete or synthetic turf before, literally everything was a learning curve. We even thought wooden posts for the shade cloth were a good idea to keep with the aesthetic until the first storm caused the wet wood to bow inwards.
What was originally intended to be a cheeky board walk down to the first hole of minigolf, turned into something much bigger with the use of recycled materials, the planks came from the centre of large cable drums, the steel supports from discarded trusses. Of course no bridge is complete if it doesn't go over water, so we added a stream underneath connecting two ponds which have become the habitat of a resident banjo frog and a breeding colony of Western Australian Pygmy Perch.
In March of 2023 our team grew by one with the arrival of young Theodore who made our family whole and is definitely the cutest kid in the world (might be biased).
With the cost of lumber through the roof, it was decided to border these holes with bricks (easier said than done), we finally finished building them in July 2023 after originally planning them out some time in 2021. Of course it had to include another bridge! This time a new skill, welding, the bridge on hole 15 was built almost entirely (about 95%) out of discarded steel sourced locally (the cross bars in the towers used to be a pool fence).
Built around salvaged pieces of the original Jurien Bay Jetties, this feature pond is our first non-liner pond. The pond has been planted and stocked to create the illusion of a salt water environment in a freshwater pond.
In September of 2023 we hosted our first major event, our own wedding. With a goal of becoming a hirable venue for formal and social functions, what better way to trouble shoot everything about the process than by being the customer. It was everything we hoped it would be and more and the venue is now available for hire with two people at the helm who know how to make it happen.
